Reaching out to individuals and making time to speak with each member of the team is essential for allowing employees to perform to their best strengths while addressing collaborative weaknesses. By improving listening skills, project managers can enhance the effectiveness of their teams. At the same time, projecting the message that you’re willing to listen will make team members more willing to talk in the first place about what’s bothering them or keeping them from being as effective as they feel they could be otherwise.
Enhance meeting minutes
Apart from just knowing what makes each person tick and understanding what’s on every individual’s mind is one thing, but people need to be able to work together as a team. Meetings are the best way to engineer times and places for everyone to touch base, but if these sessions aren’t run properly, they could be totally pointless parts of each staff member’s day.
Chad Brooks wrote for Business News Daily that running a tight ship during a team meeting is the best way to cover all the bases. Be sure to come in to every session with a flexible schedule and take the concerns and insights from individual talks into account. That way, grievances can all be aired and success identified without skipping over anyone’s opinion. This also encourages employees to be more communicative in general.
Take your time
Brooks added in the Business News Daily article that it’s important for project managers to hurry up and take their time, ostensibly. Instead of rushing through meetings, creating short touch-base opportunities or hurrying to complete every element of a project ahead of schedule, it’s necessary for effective team building and management for leaders to take their time with things.
It’s important to remain flexible and reachable. Brooks stated that leaders don’t own every element of the project, though they are responsible for the overall successful execution of these plans. At the same time, it’s necessary for people to take their time and make sure things are being done properly, as well as double-checking for quality on a regular basis.
Be more lenient
Talking to staff members on a regular basis and offering periods of time for review helps employees feel more at ease. Failure is often encountered during project management life-cycle, and leaders need to understand that not every member of a team will be able to perform to the same standard or comprehend all the tasks they have to complete on the first pass.
That’s why it’s important to be more lenient with staff during the life-cycle of a project. Instead of demanding perfection in every aspect of each task, leaders need to remember to remain flexible and communicate with every worker about how they’re progressing.
Honesty is key
A genuine interaction one time is worth 10 insincere communications. Kimbrell wrote for Forbes that hypocrisy in leadership can be significantly detrimental, so remaining true to your word and standing by your beliefs is key to maintaining a tight ship. While being lenient and communicative helps keep people on the same page and working with positive attitudes, it’s necessary to balance these elements with honest feedback. This will help staff improve their performances, so long as they’re handled properly.

Your career is something that you are going to be involved in for a large portion of your life. The better part of your waking hours for most of your week will be spent engrossed in your work, so it is important that you try to make the most out of your job. This starts with understanding your concept of success and working to achieve that definition.
You see, success means different things to different people. I recently had a discussion with a close friend about money-making careers.
“Nothing I desire to do makes money,” she’d said. “Science doesn’t interest me; math is a no; I could care less about law, and I loathe medicine.” My friend went on to say how she couldn’t imagine sitting in front of a computer for eight hours a day as an engineer, or doing any kind of IT work, for that matter.” All those fields offer their workers great salaries (especially the higher up you go), yet they meant nothing to my friend. Making good money in a field you despise didn’t equate success to her. As a writer (who freelances for multiple sites for free), I can certainly understand this. My passions may not equate a life of riches either, but the mere fact of being able to call your job your passion is success in my eyes.
Again, success is subjective, but one thing that is true for most people is that we hope to obtain it. Here are some tips for helping you achieve great success in your career:
Don’t Plan, Just Do
Planning your career is one of the fastest ways to put yourself on the wrong track in your career. You should have a clear idea of what you want to do in your life, but not necessarily a set-in-stone path that you want to take. It is crucial to stay flexible and remain completely open to all of the possibilities that may present themselves to you because they may be far better than anything else that you could have planned.
Climb the Rock Wall
Many people tell professionals to climb the ladder to success. If you truly want to be successful, however, you won’t just limit yourself to going straight up. The world is changing at a speed that is difficult for us to comprehend, which is why it is important that you be ready to look all around you; take in the opportunities; and be ready to scramble toward them. Look at your career like a rock wall: you may be climbing from side to side at times, but you are still heading upwards.
Focus on Now
It is important to have goals and hopes for advancement, but it’s even more important that you keep yourself focused on the job that you have now. If you don’t focus on being the best in your current position, you will never get the opportunity to progress on to the next one.
Ignore the Clock, Watch the Timeline
Everybody has goals of where they want to be when they reach a certain age. For most people, these goals will not be accomplished. What sets the failures apart from those that will be successful is the ability to look beyond these specific goals and not let them bog you down. Don’t let the fact that you didn’t reach a certain level by the time you were a certain age or by the time you had been in the company for a certain length of time discourage you from continuing to work toward the next goal listed on your timeline.
Be a Risk Taker
It can be scary to dive into something unknown and take on challenges that you don’t necessarily feel prepared to fulfill. This is what will push you and open up the world of opportunity. Plus, taking risks can not only benefit your professional life, but your personal life. After drumming up the courage to step out and take a risk concerning your career, you will see that courage drift over into personal areas as well.
It may be a cliché, but the most important person that you could ever be is you. You aren’t going to convince people to like, trust or advance you because you’re pretending to be someone that you’re not (or need to even be). Instead, be yourself and trust that you can get where you need to be based purely on that.
Besides, companies look for certain qualities when it comes to cultural fit, and these qualities run across a spectrum. They’re varied and diverse, which makes for a better organization. Can you imagine working for a company where every single person looked, dressed, talked and acted the same? Being yourself helps bring those unique qualities to a company that only you can offer.
Week 1 of Ultimate Coder is behind us and it’s been another exciting start to the Ultimate Coder Challenge. Challengers, for the first time, exposed their ideas and approaches to building futuristic applications where the mere waving of hands, tracking of eyes, or speaking out loud control the app experience.
The apps are rich and varied from the Sixense team’s puppet platform, to Simian Squared’s app giving users the ability to sculpt virtual clay with real hands. Eskil is thinking big, offering three apps that aim to change the PC experience. Peter is building a voice, gesture and touch-enabled photo editing app. Lee is working on a new kind of webcam that reinvents the category. And don’t forget games; SG1 Gunship goes hands-free from Code-Monkeys, while Infrared5/Brass Monkey take on a bird vs cat game of revenge. Catch up on all the posts here.
Our conclusion was that Intel did a darn good job of bringing together a really varied and interesting group of developers. The projects are all pretty different, from highly specialized industry applications to titillating entertainment.

It’s almost worrying to see the complexity of the projects being taken on here. Seriously, there are 7 weeks in total and teams are taking on huge projects. The bar is being set extremely high but if rich and engaging results come out at the end it will be a win for everyone watching.
Judges know seven weeks is short, so they are trying to make sense of the timeline with what they are hearing from Challengers. Could we be seeing early exuberance from Challengers…have some bitten off more than they can chew, are judges are underestimating the skill, or perhaps the talent and skill level has been upped this go around?
One thing is certain. The ideas are big this time, and the judges have taken notice. Where this lands between shooting too high vs going big might be evident in what we are already seeing in week 1. It is just one week but look at where some of these guys are. Infrared 5 is showing impressive character building and a story line for their game from this recent post on their site:

Judges also took time this week to set expectations for the challengers. Judge Chris Maunder of the Code Project goes as far as to outline his expectations, wanting to see apps that not only leverage perceptual computing but are apps that leverage the Ultrabook hardware platform features AND are a desirable app experience for the device:
What I mean by this is that an application that is an existing application shoehorned into an Ultrabook with support for an Ultrabook tacked on in a way that doesn’t harmonise with the original application will not get my vote.
